Openers Imrul Kayes and Tamim Iqbal dominated the first hour of play and were 67 without loss at drinks, with Tamim reaching his fifty in 46 balls. However Sri Lanka managed to fight back, removing both openers but the session still belonged to the Tigers as they went for lunch on 120 for 2.

Bangladesh managed to break the second-wicket partnership of 308 runs between Mendis and Dhanajaya in the post-lunch session. Left arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman was perhaps the most impressive among the Tigers bowlers picking up the wicket of Dhananjaya who scored 173, but the visitors were still in a commanding position.
