BNP self-proclaimed corrupt party: Obaidul
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said BNP is a “self-proclaimed corrupt party.”
“By removing section 7 from the party’s constitution in the darkness of the night, BNP has proved that they are a self-proclaimed corrupt party,” Obaidul said while reacting to a query by journalists this afternoon in Narayanganj.
The AL leader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said this while visiting in Meghna ghat area in Sonargaon.
He went there to inaugurate the second bridges of all the Kanchpur, Meghna and Gomti rivers.
“The verdict the court gave against corruption is a warning for the corrupt politicians of Bangladesh,” he said.
The minister came with the remarks two days after a special court sentenced BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in a graft case, dealing a severe blow to the party ahead of the upcoming national elections.
Talking about BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s claim that Khaleda’s verdict is “politically motivated” and “influenced by political vengeance”, Obaidul said that “I would have said this if I were in his (Fakhrul’s) place. No one can accept that he or she is corrupt.”
Section 7
Previously, according to the section 7 (e) of the party constitution, any person having a reputation of being corrupt or is an infamous person in the society will not be eligible to hold any post at any level of the party, neither will he or she be able to run for membership of the parliament on a BNP ticket.
BNP dropped the section from its constitution in its council held in 2016.
