Khaleda conviction: BNP to hold rally Feb 22
BNP today announced to hold a rally on February 22 protesting the jail sentence of its Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a corruption case.
“We have already sought information from the authorities concerned as we want to hold the rally on February 22,” BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed told reporters at its Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka.
The leader claimed that more than 4,650 BNP activists were arrested so far throughout the country in last 17 days.
Law enforcers have arrested more than 60 BNP activists in last two days during a fresh protest programme of BNP, he said.
Yesterday, BNP declared fresh agitation programmes that include conducting mass signature campaigns across the country tomorrow, submitting memorandums to all deputy commissioners on Sunday and staging demonstrations in all district towns and metropolitan cities, except Dhaka, on Tuesday.
Khaleda was convicted in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on February 8 by a special court in Dhaka. She landed in jail after she was sentenced to five years' imprisonment in the case.
Soon after her conviction, BNP announced countrywide demonstrations on Feb 9 and 10. Later, it staged protests from Feb 12 to 14.
