DNCC polls: HC asked to dispose of rules
The Supreme Court today asked the High Court to expeditiously hear and dispose of the rules over the legality of the schedule of Dhaka North City Corporation elections.
The High Court issued three separate rules on January 17 and 18 asking the government and Election Commission to explain why the elections schedule should not be declared illegal.
Today, the four-member of Appellate Division of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain asked the HC bench led by Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore to hear and dispose of the rules immediately.
The High Court’s stay order on the elections will continue until disposal of the rules following the SC order.
The apex court passed the order following three separate leave to appeal petitions filed by the EC seeking stay on the HC order.
Following three separate writ petition, the HC, on January 17 and 18 stayed for six months the process for DNCC and DSCC elections that was scheduled to hold on February 26.
The High Court also issued three separate rules asking the authorities concerned, Election Commission and the government to explain why the election schedule should not be declared illegal.
