UP polls: Man 'killed' as cops fire during clash
A man was reportedly killed when police opened gunfire to quell chaos at a polling station ahead of Tangail Union Parishad elections in Ghatail upazila in the wee hours of today.
Our local correspondent reports, the deceased was identified as Abdul Malek, 32, son of Nesar Ali and a relative of one Bulbuli Begum, a reserved women’s seat aspirant of Sagardighi Union.
According to what could be known, police opened gunfire to disperse the ballot snatchers at Shonamuri Guptobrindaban Govt Primary School around 3:00am.
Police opened fire following the instructions from the presiding officer, said Sanjit Kumar Roy, police superintendent of Tangail. “I’ve heard that one person died afterwards.”
The body was found in Mymensingh’s Fulbaria, just two kilometres away from Ghatail upazila. Last reported, voting at the election centre remained suspended following the violence.
Today, Union Parishad elections are taking place across eight Unions in three upazilas and a municipality in Tangail.
