East Kazipara embroidery factory catches fire

A worker died and two others sustained severe burns as a fire broke out in an embroidery factory in the capital's East Kazipara area early yesterday.

Masum, 18, succumbed to his injuries at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

With more than 80 percent burns, Mohammad Mainuddin, 19, and Al Amin, 20, are undergoing treatment in the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU), said doctors.

The fire originated around 3:15am at Sadid Sourcing, the factory located on the ground floor of a six-storey building, said firefighters.

Six firefighting units managed to douse the blaze around 4:30am, said Mahfuz Riben, a duty officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters.

The fire might have originated from a short circuit, said fire officials. Swapan Sheikh, who escaped unhurt, said, “I and Asgar Ali were working in a room and the trio in another room. Around 3:00am, I heard a loud bang and the three ran to our room with their bodies on fire.”

Swapan and Asgar took them to a bathroom to douse the fire on their bodies. They later pushed the injured out of the building through an opening with the help of locals already gathered there seeing the blaze.

ANOTHER PALLABI FIRE VICTIM DIES

Sanitary worker Mahbubul Hasan, who sustained 85 percent burns after a water reservoir exploded at a building in Pallabi area on Tuesday, died at DMCH early yesterday.

With this, three out of five victims died. Two others are still undergoing treatment there.
