ACC to file statement against Khaleda’s bail Sunday
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will submit a concise statement to the Supreme Court on Sunday on its appeal against the bail order of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
A concise statement contains the points on which the lawyers place arguments on an appeal before the court.
“We have prepared the concise statement on the appeal against the High Court order that granted bail to Khaleda Zia in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. We will submit it to the Supreme Court on Sunday in line with its March 19 order,” ACC lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star today.
The Appellate Division of the SC will hear the appeals against the HC order of bail to Khlaeda Zia on May 8, the ACC lawyer added.
Meanwhile, Attorney General MahbubeyAlam told The Daily Star that his office will submit a separate concise statement to the apex court within this week on the government’s appeal against Khaleda’s bail.
Khaleda Zia’s lawyers are supposed submit two separate concise statements to the SC on the same appeals in two weeks after the ACC and government submit their statements, he added.
Following two separate leave to appeal petitions filed by the ACC and the government, the SC on March 19 stayed the HC order that granted bail to Khaleda in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
The apex court also allowed the ACC and the government to move separate appeals before this court against the HC order of bail to Khaleda Zia, and fixed May 8 for hearing the appeals.
Khaleda landed in prison on February 8 after she was handed the five-year jail sentence by a Dhaka court for misappropriating a donation fund of the Zia Orphanage Trust.
The HC on March 12 granted her four months' bail on four grounds: a short sentence of five years, health condition, her facing trial, and that the case records have reached the court.
