MPs want JS body for quota system solution
Several lawmakers today called for forming a parliamentary committee to assist the government on finding out ways for a peaceful solution over student’s movement on reformation of existing quota system in public service.
“A parliamentary body should be formed to assist the government to find out ways for an acceptable solution regarding the student’s movement on quota reform,” independent lawmaker Rustam Al Farazi told the House.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, who was in the chair, however did not give any ruling.
As the violence erupted across the country, some students allegedly vandalised the residence of Dhaka University vice chancellor.
Terming the unprecedented and shameful attack on Dhaka University vice chancellor’s house, the lawmakers also demanded exemplary punishment to the attackers.
Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said the government does not have any kind of anger on the students.
Over the quota system, she said the government does not want to create any Dhaka based elite class to pave ways for getting jobs.
She also lambasted the demonstrators for vandalising the VC’s residence wearing masks.
Taking the floor, state minister Tarana Halim said, “Realising demands through movement is a constitutional right. But realising demands through vandalism cannot be acceptable anyway.”
Workers Party MP Yeasin Ali and BNF MP Abul Kalam Azad called for resolving the crisis through discussions.
