Rape case accused killed in ‘gunfight' with Rab

The main accused in a case filed for raping an eight-year-old girl was killed in a “gunfight” with Rab in Jessore town early yesterday.

The dead, Al Amin alias Babu, 26, of Kholadanga area in the town, allegedly raped the girl at Chachra Southpara in the town on March 31.

A case has been lodged in this connection with Jessore Sadar Police Station, said police.

Major Ziaur Rahman, commander of Rab-6 in Jessore, said around 3:45am, a Rab team raided Kholadanga Mandalgati area on information that some criminals were holding a secret meeting there.

Sensing the Rab members' presence, the criminals opened fire. The Rab members then returned fire, triggering the “gunfight”.

After the “gun battle”, Rab members found bullet-hit Al Amin lying on the spot. He was rushed to Jessore Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead, the Rab official said.

Rab also claimed to have recovered a homemade gun, one bullet and a sharp weapon from the spot.

Besides the rape case, Al Amin stood accused in five criminal cases filed with different police stations, the Rab official added.
