‘Robber’ killed in Meherpur ‘gunfight’
A suspected robber was killed in a “gunfight”with police in Gangni upazila of Meherpur early today.
Harendranath Sarker, officer-in-charge of Gangni Police Station, said they raided a banana orchard at Hemayetpur village on information that some “robbers” were holding a secret meeting to rob vehicles on Hemayetpur-Amtola road.
The police team cordoned off the orchard around 3:30am and asked the criminals to surrender. Instead of complying with the order, the criminals starting firing at the law enforcers, the OC said.
In reply, police also opened fire that triggered the “gunfight”, the police official said.
After an hour-long gun battle, the criminals fled the scene. Later, the police team found a bullet-hit body on the spot.
Police sent the body to Gangni Upazila Health Complex where on duty doctor Ali Reza declared him dead.
Two police men were also injured in the incident, police claimed.
