Bar Council election May 14
The election to Bangladesh Bar Council, a statutory body regulating the country’s lawyers, will be held on May 14 to elect its 14 executive members.
The voting will be held from 10:00am to 5:00pmat the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) in Dhaka and all the civil courts at the districts and Bajitpur, Ishwarganj, Durgapur, Bhanga, Chikandi, Patia, Satkania, Fatikchhari, Sandwip, Hatia, Nabinagar and Paikgachha Police Stations.
Bar Council sources said over 43,000 lawyers registered with the Bangladesh Bar Council will cast their votes in the elections.
The elected members will select one of them as the vice chairman of the Bar Council who discharges duty as its chief executive.
The attorney general, the top law officer of the government, functions as ex-officio chairman of this statutory of the lawyers.
The election of Bar Council was held for the last time in August 2015 and the tenure of the elected committee expired on June 30, 2007, according to the sources.
Total 59 lawyers are contesting in the election.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, who is the former officio chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council, told The Daily Star that all preparations have been taken to hold the election on May 14.
He also said the incumbent committee of the Bar Council will discharge duties until a new elected committee will take the responsibility.
