Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) today filed a petition with the Supreme Court seeking stay on the High Court order that asked it to pay compensation to the family of Rajib Hossain, who lost his right hand in a road accident and later died last month.

The SC chamber judge may hold hearing on the petition on Sunday, BTRC's lawyer barrister Muniruzzaman told reporters today.

Citing from the petition, he told reporters that how the BTRC will pay the money as it (BTRC) runs with government money and it was not assessed who is and how much responsible for the accident.

The High Court on may 8 directed the owner oftwo buses --BTRC and ShajanParibahan-- to pay Tk 1 corer to the family of Rajib Hossain.

The High Court said the bus owners have to pay Tk 50 lakh within a month to an account which would jointly be opened under the names of Rajib's aunt Jahanara Begum, and their relatives, customs officer Omar Faruk, in Sonal Bank's Motijheel branch.

The High Court also directed the bus owners to submit a report after complying with the order to this court by June 25.

The court said it would fix the next date for paying the remaining Tk 50lakh after receiving the compliance report.

Today the BTRC submitted the petition to the Apex court seeking stay on the portion of the High Court order in respect of BTRC, so that, the BTRC need not to pay the compensation.

After two weeks in coma, Rajib, a third-year student of Government Titumir College, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on April 17.

Rajib lost his right hand after it got stuck between two speeding buses of BRTC and SajanParibahan which were trying to overtake each other in Bangla Motor area in Dhaka on April 3.
