Tareque killed ex-PDB official Khijir Khan: Cops

Tariqul Islam Tareque, the alleged Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militant held yesterday, killed ex-Power Development Board (PDB) chief Khijir Khan, police claimed today.

He slit the throat of the PDB former-chairman during the October 5 killing in Dhaka's Maddhya Badda, Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of Detective Branch (DB) told reporters.

The information was obtained after primary quizzing, he said.

Detectives yesterday arrested Tareque, an alleged organiser of banned Islamist militant outfit, from Tangail and Alek Bebari, from Dhaka's Mirpur, in a case filed for killing Khan.

Tareque lead the killing mission participated by at least eight others and a driver in two groups, he said. The group was active since last two years targeting religious leaders like pirs and their followers.

Law enforcers also claimed that they were able to get a name of their next target. The group was also involved in robberies to finance terrorist activities. 

PLACED ON 3 DAY REMAND EACH

A Dhaka court today placed the two suspects on a three day remand each in connection with the case of killing Khijir Khan.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rashed Talukdar passed the order after police produced them before it with a 10-day remand prayer. No lawyer stood to defend them.

Claiming themselves innocent, they told the court that they were implicated with the killing falsely.
