This collage of pictures shows the degradation of the environment due to the use of plastic. These canals in Keraniganj and Mugda are testament to the poor state of water drainage systems in the country which are clogged with plastic waste that does not decompose easily. Despite a ban, use of plastic continues unabated in the country. Polybags are used in almost all the kitchen markets with shopkeepers giving them away for free for customers to carry their purchases in. Currently, Bangladesh generates around 381.36 tonnes of plastic waste every day while around 249.86 tonnes go to landfills. However, recycling remains a distant dream and plastic continues to accumulate beneath the land creating a barrier between the soil and the water. Little control, cheaper prices and lack of alternatives, all contribute to the use of the plastic. Photo: Sheikh Enam/ Anisur Rahman/ Rashed Shumon
