My heart belongs to theatre - Shahiduzzaman Selim

Shahiduzzaman Selim is a celebrated name in the world of television, theatre and cinema. Known for his passion for acting and his versatile roles, Selim has captivated his fans and admirers for years. The two-time national award-winning actor is keeping quite busy and still has a lot to offer to the audience. He opens up about his dreams, his past accomplishments and more in a conversation with The Daily Star.

You have won the national award for the second time. How do you feel?

Selim: I can't put into words how happy I feel to have won the award twice now. It is a great honour to be acknowledged by the nation and its people in this way. I won the award for the film Oggatonama – that too for a negative role. The film was highly appreciated both at home and abroad. My national award was just the icing on the cake.

You are predominantly known for your roles on television and in theatre. What would you say about your endeavours on the silver-screen?

Selim: I don't think I have been able to showcase my potential on the silver-screen the same way I have in theatre and on television. So, I definitely want to work in more films. I want to reach a wider through films. I want to be remembered for my roles in different films.

What are your aspirations, in terms of the type of cinema you want to work on?

Selim: I will not rush and pick just anything that comes my way. Quality work is a top priority for me. I want to play roles that challenge and help me evolve as an artiste.

You are doing quite a lot of theatre projects. What does theatre mean to you?

Selim: I have been working in theatre for years now. It is my home and my heart belongs to it. I have worked in several plays in the theatre arena of Dhaka. Now, I am directing Ponchonari Akkhyan and Dhaboman. I think I am the best version of myself when I am on stage.
