BNP wants Gazipur police chief ousted
BNP today expressed doubts over security arrangement in Gazipur ahead of the city corporation election and demanded that the district’s police chief be removed.
In a written statement, BNP alleged that the police superintendent has been playing a partisan role ahead of the elections to Gazipur City Corporation on June 26.
A three-member delegation of BNP led by its standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda this afternoon and handed over the memo, Khan told The Daily Star after the meeting.
He alleged, the police superintendent is working to ensure victory for the ruling Awami League-backed mayor candidate and is harassing the BNP leaders and activists.
In return, CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad assured the BNP delegation that the Gazipur will be held in a free, fair and congenial atmosphere.
The GCC polls, which was scheduled to be held on May 15 before a stay on it by the High Court, will be held the day after tomorrow. Seven mayoral candidates, including Jahangir Alam of Awami League and Hasan Uddin Sarker of BNP, will vie at the polls.
Others GCC mayoral candidates are Md Ruhul Amin of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Md Jalal Uddin of Bangladesh Islami Front, Fazlul Haque Minar of IslamiOikkyaJote, Md Nasir Uddin of IslamiAndolan Bangladesh and independent candidate Farid Ahmed.
A total of 11 lakh voters are expected to cast their votes in the upcoming polls of 57 general ward councilors and 19 reserve women seats.
