Central BNP leader held by police
Detectives picked up BNP national executive committee member Maj (retd) Mizanur Rahman from his house in the capital's Gulshan in the wee hours of yesterday.
Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said Mizan and four others were detained over attempts to make Gazipur City Corporation election questionable.
Some devices and two audio clips in this connection were seized, he told The Daily Star. A case was being filed under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act, he added.
Mizan's family members said four to five men knocked at their door around 2:00am, introduced themselves as detectives and asked them to open it.
The family members did not open the door. Instead, they told the detectives that they were neither in uniform nor had any arrest warrant. They also requested the law enforcers to come in the morning.
However, the detectives kept asking them to open the door. Around 3:00am, the detectives broke it open and picked up Mizan, they added.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi yesterday condemned the incident and demanded that Mizan be produced before the people immediately.
