Single candidate for city polls, 20-party decides

BNP-led 20-party alliance has decided to support and campaign for single mayor candidates for the city corporation elections to Sylhet, Rajshahi and Barisal.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the alliance, held at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office, today, Nazrul Islam Khan, coordinator of the alliance, said in a briefing.

“We have decided that one candidate from the 20-party alliance will vie for mayoral post in every city corporation and the alliance members will support them,” said Nazrul Islam Khan, also a BNP standing committee member.

The polls for Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal city corporations will be held on July 30, according to schedules announced by the Election Commission on June 13.

As per the election schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is June 28, while the dates for scrutinising those are July 1 and July 2. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 9.

BNP has chosen Ariful Haque Chowdhury, the current mayor of Sylhet, for running the mayoral race for Sylhet City Corporation polls. Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, current mayor of Rajshahi was chosen for Rajshahi city and Mojibor Rahman Sarwar for Barisal city.

The elections of Khulna, Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal cities were held on June 15, 2013.
