Girls rally for safe campus at DU, meet anti demo
Girls of Dhaka University have come down to the streets in large numbers, in follow through of the agitation that sparked at female dorms last night, demanding a campus safe for students.
Wielding banners of respective halls and ‘Students Against Repression’, they paraded through campus this morning chanting slogans against imprisonment of university students and their unconditional release, our correspondent reports from the spot.

They were in opposing stand to another group demonstrating at the base of Raju Sculpture, wielding a banner of ‘General Students’, demanding an end to unrest at campus. They were saying, they want to walk away from agitation and go back to their education.
Students claimed, this group is being led by ruling party’s student front Chhatra League who charged on the students earlier this week, beating them up mercilessly – a trait that was quickly picked up by Chhatra League at other universities outside Dhaka.
The girls had a pre-announced programme at Raju Sculpture around 11:00am which focused on the recent spate of attacks and harassment on students involved with the quota reform movement; but they found the space already occupied by the ‘General Students’ banner.
Last reported, the girls had gathered near Rokeya Hall. They were chanting their slogans just about a hundred yards away from the ‘General Students’ holding their own anti-demo.
After the rounds of attacks and arrest of students leading the quota reform protest in civil service, the movement went a bit down with activists burrowing into the ground in fear of “facing the wrath” before things changed drastically last night.
Last night, all the female dorms saw overflowing protests, in unison, against the harassment on students and their detention. The campus was, yet once again in a space of two months, turned sleepless and the shouts of protests reverberated through its walls.
SOCIOLOGY DEPT DEMONSTRATES
Students of the Department of Sociology at Dhaka University demonstrated today demanding immediate and unconditional release of Moshiur Rahman, a student of the department.
Moshiur Rahman, a joint convener of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad, the platform leading the ongoing quota reform movement, was allegedly picked up by Bangladesh Chhtara League (BCL) activists on June 30. Later, it was discovered that he was in Keraniganj Police Station.
The teachers and students of the department claimed that Moshiur has been kept under police custody without any specific accusations. They also declared to boycott classes and exams of until he is released.
Chairperson of the department Nehal Karim, Professor Amanullah, Associate Professor Samina Luthfa, and Assistant Professor Debashish Kundu were present at the rally among more than 100 students.
