The ongoing quota reform movement actually has a disguised motive of sabotage against the government, vice chancellor (VC) of Rajshahi University (RU) has alleged.

RU VC Professor M Abdus Sobhan told this to reporters expressing his views regarding the quota reform movement while attending the 65th founding anniversary programme of Rajshahi University today on the university premises.

“Though many of us are calling it an anti-quota movement or quota reform movement, actually it is an ‘anti-government movement’ and nothing about quota system,” he said.

“A vested quarter is provoking our students into this anti-government movement,” he added.

He also termed the students demanding reform to the existing quota system as “left-leaning Shibir students” who are trying to carry out sabotage activities against the government.

Earlier in the morning the VC inaugurated the founding anniversary programme by hoisting the national flag with university and hall flags in front of the administrative building of RU.

The university started its journey in 1953 with six departments under three faculties and with only 161 students and 68 teachers. Prof Itrat Hossain Zuberi was the first VC of the university.
