Mahmudur Rahman gets anticipatory bail
The High Court yesterday granted anticipatory bail for six weeks to Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of news portal Amar Desh, in a defamation case filed for making “derogatory remarks” about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman passed the order following a petition filed by Mahmudur seeking anticipatory bail in the case lodged in Sunamganj.
Mahmudur, who was attacked on Kushtia court premises after he secured bail in another defamation case on July 22, appeared before the HC bench yesterday for bail in the case.
A local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League in Sunamganj filed the case with Sunamganj Model Police Station on December 14 last year against Mahmudur for making “derogatory remarks” about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
On July 26 this year, a Sunamganj court issued arrested warrant against Mahmudur in the case.
Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah said the government will move an appeal before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the HC order that granted bail to Mahmudur Rahman.
