14 killed in two road accidents

At least 14 people were killed in two road crashes in Feni and Narsingdi yesterday.

A bus and a human haulier collided head-on on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Nayakandi of Narsingdi's Belabo around 8:45pm. Eight people inside the human haulier died on the spot and 10 others were injured.

The identities of the victims could not be known immediately, our Brahmanbaria correspondent reports quoting police.

Six people, including five of a family, were killed and seven others injured when a cattle-laden truck had a head-on collision with a microbus in Feni's Chhagalnaiya early yesterday.

The deceased are: Jahanara Begum, 58, Qatar expatriate Sobuj's mother-in-law, Sobuj's two children Shuvo, 7, and Noman, 4, his sister Runa Akter, 24, niece Popi Akter, 18 -- all hailing from Motbi village in Laxmipur Sadar -- and microbus driver Sharif Rahman, 45, of Raipura upazila of the district.

Police and Sobuj's relatives said the microbus carrying 13 people was heading for Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong to receive Sobuj on his arrival from Qatar. The vehicle left Laxmipur for Chittagong around 1:00am. 

The accident happened on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway when the cattle-laden truck from Teknaf crashed into the microbus near Sultana Filling Station in Muhuriganj around 2:45am. The six died on the spot, they said.

The bodies of the deceased were sent to Feni Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsies, said Sub-Inspector Mahbub Alam, in-charge of Muhuriganj police outpost.
