Quota reform leader Luma lands in jail after remand

A Dhaka court today rejected a petition seeking bail for quota reform leader Lutfun Nahar Luma and sent her to jail in a case filed on charges of “spreading rumours on social media and instigating violence” during the recent student movement for safe roads.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sarafuzzaman Ansari passed the order after Inspector Rafikul Islam of Cyber Crime Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) produced Luma before his court on completion of her three-day remand.

Luma, a student of Eden College, was picked up from her grandfather’s house in Sirajganj in a pre-dawn raid on August 15.

She was shown arrested in a case filed with Ramna Police Station on August 5 under the controversial Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.

Two mobile phones were also seized from her possession.
