Akifa's Death: Bus driver held again in Faridpur

Rapid Action Battalion on Wednesday arrested again the driver of a bus that killed 13-month-old Akifa Yasmin on August 28.

A team of Rab-12 arrested Mohid Mia Khokon, 35, in Faridpur around 11:00pm, MM Mohaiminur Rashid, company commander of Rab-12,  told a press conference in Kushtia yesterday.

Khokon is the prime accused in a case filed over the accident.

On Monday, Khokon surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Kushtia. Bus owner Joynal was also produced before the court.

Rab arrested Joynal on Sunday night in Faridpur and handed him over to Kushtia Model Police the  next day.

MM Morshed, senior judicial magistrate, granted bail to both on Monday.

Suman Kadri, sub-inspector of Kushtia Model Police Station, on Tuesday appealed to the court to charge them under section-302 of the Penal Code.

Section-302 has provisions for death penalty and life imprisonment.

The court then issued arrest warrants for Khokon and Joynal.

Akifa was critically injured after she fell from the arms of her mother Rina Khatun when they were hit by the bus in Kushtia on August 28. The baby succumbed to her head injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on August 30

The following day, Akifa's father Harunur Rashid filed a case with Kushtia Model Police Station against bus owner Joynal, driver Khokon and his helper Altaf Hossain.

Rab officials said they were trying to arrest Altaf.
