‘Robber' killed in Chattogram ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed and another detained in what police claimed was a gunfight at North Kattoli area of Chattogram city in the wee hours of today.

The deceased was identified as Sabuj alias Pichchi Sabuj, 24, an accused in four to five cases. Another Apu, 28, was arrested, our local staff correspondent reports.

Police raided the area around 12:30am based on a tip that a gang of robbers were operating in the area, said Shondip Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (OC) of Pahartali Police Station.

Sensing presence of police, the gang of robbers allegedly attacked them with brick chips and gunfire. Police were forced to fire back, which triggered the “gunfight”.

After the gunfight, bullet-hit Sabuj was found lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared him dead.

Four firearms were found at the spot including one foreign-made pistol and one local-made light gun. The body of Sabuj has been kept at the hospital’s morgue for autopsy.
