Rift in EC is a national crisis: Fakhrul
Pointing out to differing opinions within the Election Commission, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the division within the commission is a national crisis.
“One election commissioner has announced that his proposals for a fair election is being disregarded, others are saying his opinions are unconstitutional,” Fakhrul said.
“A rift has appeared within the commission. But, there has to be one Election Commission. The crisis that has surfaced within the commission is a national crisis,” he added.
Fakhrul was speaking at a discussion programme arranged at Segunbagicha Swadhinata Hall, organised by Jatiya Ganatantrik Party this afternoon.
The BNP leader’s observation was made reflecting on the disagreement between election commissioners within the commission; which was published on the media.
For twice now, Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder walked out of the commission’s meeting with a “note of dissent” saying his opinions have been disregarded.
Fakhrul alleged, the “defunct” commission will not be able to hold a free, fair and acceptable election. “They will just hand over power to Awami League for another term.”
He warned, the people will give a befitting reply to “such vested quarters”.
