Khaleda taken to jail illegally: Fakhrul
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been taken to prison illegally, her party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged.
“Doctors did not release her. This was all the doing of the hospital’s director,” Fakhrul told reporters at the gates of old central jail on Nazimuddin Road.
He was reflecting on Khaleda’s shifting to jail, which took place earlier in the day, from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
‘THIS IS INHUMANE’
BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan has labelled the move “inhumane.”
“She needs more treatment. Doctors have said she will become paralysed without proper treatment. Instead, they’ve taken her to prison,” he said.
Khan, who was speaking at a discussion programme at Jatiya Press Club, condemned the move and demanded that Khaleda’s treatment is resumed.
WHAT HAPPENED?
This morning, Khaleda Zia was taken out from the hospital and taken to old central jail before the scheduled hearing in Niko graft case.
Sources have said, she will not be returned to the hospital.
Hospital’s Director Brig Gen Abdullah Al Harun told The Daily Star that the doctors have released her with a discharge certificate.
Khaleda, who came out on a wheelchair, was transported to Nazimuddin Road in a black SUV of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, followed by a convoy.
WHY KHALEDA IS IN JAIL?
Khaleda landed in the old central jail on February 8 after a special court sentenced her to five years' rigorous imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
The High Court on October 30 enhanced the punishment of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to 10 years imprisonment in the case.
Besides, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was also convicted in Zia Charitable Trust corruption case and sentenced to seven years' rigorous imprisonment by a special court on October 29.
