New US ambassador-designate arrives in Dhaka

New US Ambassador-designate to Bangladesh Earl R Miller has arrived in Dhaka to take up his diplomatic assignment in Bangladesh, the US Embassy in Dhaka announced today.

The new US ambassador-designate, who arrived on Sunday, will succeed Ambassador Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat who left Dhaka on November 2 after discharging her assignment in the country for nearly four years.

Marcia Bernicat became the US ambassador to Bangladesh on February 4, 2015.

The US ambassador-designate will formally begin assignment after presenting his credentials to President Abdul Hamid soon, Foreign Ministry officials said.

Prior to his nomination as the US ambassador to Bangladesh, Miller served as the US envoy to Botswana from 2014 to 2018. 

Miller was confirmed as US ambassador to Bangladesh by the US Senate on October 11. Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced Miller’s nomination on July 17.

Ambassador Miller, a career member of the US Senior Foreign Service, joined the Department of State in 1987.

He served previously as Consul General at the US Consulate General in Johannesburg of South Africa from 2011 to 2014.

Ambassador Miller also served in Washington, San Francisco, Miami and Boston and at the US embassies in El Salvador, Malaysia, Indonesia, Iraq and India. 

He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and a former US Marine Corps officer.

He is the recipient of the Department of State’s Award for Heroism and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Shield of Bravery.

Ambassador Miller is a polyglot and speaks French, Spanish, and Indonesian languages besides English.
