A fire broke out at a warehouse of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) in Narayanganj today.

The fire broke out around 12:30pm at the warehouse of dredging pipes in Khanpur area near the Narayanganj port, reports our local correspondent.

The fire originated from plastic pipes kept on the warehouse premises and later spread to the warehouse, said Shahidullah, deputy director of BIWTA Narayanganj port.

The blaze became stronger as it came in contact with chemicals stored inside the warehouse, he added.

On information, five units of firefighters rushed to the spot and are trying to bring the blaze under control, said Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Later, 14 more units of firefighters joined the effort but the fire was yet to come under control till last reported at 5:30pm.  

Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan visited the spot around 3:30pm.
