Tigers bat and bowl into record books
In an incredible day of Test cricket, Bangladesh wrote their name into the records books with the bat and ball today during the second Test against West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
All 11 Bangladesh batsmen reached double figures as the Tigers became the 13th team to do so in Test cricket history. With the ball Shakib Al Hasan and Mehedi Miraz made Bangladesh the first team in the last 128 years of Test cricket to castle all five top-order batsmen.
Captain Shakib and co-conspirator MIraz laid seize on the West Indies batsmen after Bangladesh had posted 508 in the first innings. The duo picked up five wickets with Shakib grabbing two and Miraz bagging three wickets in a twin spell which saw West Indies slump to five for 29. The interesting facet of their top-order destruction was that each and every batsmen were dismissed out bowled -- a feat that has not been accomplished in the last 128 years of Test cricket.
The last time it happened was in 1890 during a Test match between England and Australia at the Kennington Oval when English pace bowlers Fred Martin and George Lohmann attained the feat, bagging the scalps of all five top-order batsmen out bowled as England won the Test by two wickets.
Tigers are the third team to accomplish the feat, the only other instance of this happening was in 1879 in a game which also involved England and Australia. During that match at the Melbourne Cricket ground, Australia had drowned English batsmen in sorrow, winning the match by 10 wickets with Australian bowler Frederick Spofforth, Frank Allan and Tom Garett castling all five top-order English batsmen.
Bangladesh batsmen had earlier attained the feat of all 11 batsmen getting into double figures after they were bowled out for 508. Mahmudullah Riyad, who hit a patient 136 off 242 deliveries, laced with 10 fours was the top-scorer for the Tigers while his last batting partner Nayeem Hasan, the number 11, remained unbeaten on 12 -- the lowest score among the 11 Bangladesh batsmen in this innings. The last team to have all 11 batters reach double figures in an innings was South Africa, who attained the feat against England in 2016.
