ULAB celebrates Karl Marx’s 200th birth anniversary

The Department of English and Humanities (DEH) at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) celebrated Karl Marx's 200^th birth anniversary through an international conference from November 30 – December 1, titled 'Language, Literature, Culture and Politics: Marx's Bicentenary Conference'. The conference announced an open call for papers from around the nation relevant to Marxism and the contemporary world, from which a select few were presented at the conference in plenary sessions.

The two day conference was graced by the presence of a number of noteworthy scholars from Bangladesh, including Professor Rafiqul Islam, Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury, Professor Salimullah Khan, Professor Kaiser Haq, Professor Khaliquzzaman Elias, Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam, Professor Fakrul Alam, Professor M M Akash, and Professor Muhammad Ibrahim.  The papers presented at the conference included 'Karl Marx on India: A Postcolonial Perspective', 'The Specter of Naxalgia in Meghnadbodh Rohoshyo', 'Marx after Fanon: Whatever Happened to Alienation', 'The Social Justice Eyewash: Experiences of International Graduate Students in a Gender, Race and Cultural Studies School', and 'Education Legitimizes Social Inequalities Through the Myth of Meritocracy'. A number of presenters drew comparisons between Karl Marx and Rabindranath Tagore's ideologies and thoughts. The conference was concluded with the presentation 'Imagining Liberation: Karl Marx and Lalon Fakir' by activist and musician, Arup Rahee.
