Tarique's ex-APS sent to jail

A Dhaka court today sent Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu, a defeated BNP candidate for Shariatpur-3 constituency, to jail after rejecting his bail in a case filed for allegedly distributing Tk 8 crore to influence the December 30 national election and instigate violence.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shahidul Islam passed the order CID Inspector Ashraful Islam, also the investigation officer of the case, produced Apu before it on expiry of his five-day remand.

Another Dhaka court on January 10 placed Apu, former assistant personal secretary to BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, placed Apu on a five-day remand for interrogation about the incident.

Apu is the four accused in the case filed with Motijheel Police Station. He was defeated in the election after running as Jatiya Oikyafront candidate in Shariatpur-3 constituency.

In the today’s forwarding report, the IO said Apu gave important information about the incident which was being verified while defence submitted a petition seeking bail in the case.

On January 4, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Apu in the capital’s United Hospital, where was undergoing treatment since December 24.       

Earlier, on December 25, Rab detained three people -- Joynal Abedin, Alamgir Hossain and Ali Haider -- in Motijheel and Gulshan areas in Dhaka with Tk 8 crore and several cheques worth around Tk 10 crore in their possession. They were allegedly distributing money in a bid to influence the national election and instigate violence.

Ali is the managing director of United Enterprise and Corporation, while Joynal and Alamgir are employees of Amena Enterprise and Services Trust Ltd, a firm owned by Apu.

The following day, Ali, Joynal and Alamgir were placed on five-day remands each. They were sent to jail on January 1, after completion of their remand.
