5 killed, 2 injured in road accidents
At least five persons were killed and two others injured in separate road accidents across the country yesterday.
In Narayanganj, four people were killed and another was injured, after a car fell into a ditch at Taltola area of Sonargaon upazila on the Asian highway in Narayanganj early yesterday, said Imanur Hossain, sub-inspector of Sonargaon Police Station.
The deceased were identified as Shahidullah Moktar, 45, general secretary of Brahmandi union Jubo League; Ripon Miah, 35, a Jubo League activist; Momen Miah, 32, member of Araihazar municipality ward no 9 Awami League; and Raju Miah, 32, driver of the car, reports our correspondent.
The injured Robin Hossain, 38, is a relative of Narayanganj-2 lawmaker Nazrul Islam Babu. He was admitted at a hospital in Dhaka, said SI Imanur.
Around 11am, locals spotted the SUV in a ditch at Taltola area and informed police.
Police and fire service rushed to the spot and recovered the vehicle around 12:30pm. They also found four dead bodies inside the car, while another was rescued alive.
The five men were on their way to Araihazar upazila from Dhaka. When the car reached Taltola area, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it plunged into the ditch, locals said.
The four passengers died after the vehicle sank into the water, the SI also said.
Robin, son-in-law of Fatehpur union parishad chairman Abu Taleb Mollah, is the owner of the car. The five men were returning home after attending the Awami League celebration rally in Dhaka's Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday, family said.
The family members submitted a petition to the Deputy Commissioner in presence of lawmaker Nazrul Islam Babu and officer-in-charge of Araihazar Police Station, said Selim Miah, inspector (investigation) of Sonargaon Police Station.
However, they have refused to file any case in this regard, he added.
Meanwhile in Jamalpur, a motorcyclist was killed and his pillion was injured when his bike hit a tree in Jamalpur Sadar upazila yesterday, reports our local correspondent.
The deceased was identified as Masud Miah, 20, while the injured is Sagor, 21, police said.
The incident took place when Masud lost control over the bike and hit a roadside tree. He died on spot, said police.
Locals rushed Sagor to a local hospital from where he was referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said Shafiquzzaman, resident medical officer of the hospital.
No further details were known immediately.
