Chhayanaut to be conferred Tagore Award on Monday

Bangladesh’s leading cultural group Chhayanaut will be conferred the Indian government’s prestigious Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony on Monday.

Two other winners of the award -- Rajkumar Singhajit Singh and Ram Sutar Vanji -- will also be conferrd the award on the day, our New Delhi correspondent reports quoting a statement of the India’s Culture Ministry issued today.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind will present the Tagore Award among the winners in a ceremony to be held at the Pravasi Bhartiya Kendra in New Delhi, according to the statement.

Chhayanaut will be provided the award for 2015 while Rajkumar Singhajit Singh and Ram Sutar Vanji for the years 2014 and 2016 respectively, it added.

On October 25 last year, Indian Culture Ministry announced the name of Chhayanaut as the winner of Tagore Award for 2015 for its outstanding contribution to cultural harmony.

The award, given every year, carries an amount of Rs One crore (convertible to foreign currency), a citation in a scroll, a plaque and an exquisite traditional handicraft/handloom item.

The Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony was instituted by the government of India from 2012 recognising the contributions to humanity at large with the works and ideas of Rabindranath Tagore as part of the commemoration of his 150th birth anniversary in 2012 for promoting values of cultural harmony.

The award is given to individuals, associations, institutions or organisations for their outstanding contribution towards promoting values of cultural harmony.

The first Tagore Award in 2012 was conferred on sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar and the second award in 2013 on composer Zubin Mehta.
