A police constable was killed as a lorry ran over him in Shreepur upazila of Gazipur this afternoon.

Nazrul Islam, 51, a member of special branch (SB) of police in Naogaon, came to Tongi of Gazipur for performing his duty in Biswa Ijtema, said Delwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Mawna Highway Police Station.

The lorry ran over Nazrul in front of Mawna highway police box when he was crossing Dhaka-Mymensingh highway around 4:00pm, said Hari Das, a sub-inspector of Mawna Highway Police Station.

Critically injured, Nazrul, son of Barkat Pramanik of Pathaliapara village in Shahjadpur upazila of Sirajganj, was rushed to a local clinic where doctors declared him dead, the SI told our Gazipur correspondent.

Meanwhile, police detained the lorry driver Jalil Hasan, 30, and seized the vehicle, he added.
