Cumilla University student beaten up by ‘BCL men’

A Cumilla University student was beaten up allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists of the university unit yesterday. 

Injured Abul Hasan ,23, is the 4th semester student of anthropology department, Abdur Rahman, chairman of the department, confirmed to our Cumilla correspondent.

Hasan alleged that BCL president Elias Hossain Sabuj along with BCL secretary of Datta Hall unit Diptto, Ali Bukhari, Muntasir Hridoy, Salman and Picchi Masum beat him up mercilessly at university gate from 12:30pm to 3:00pm.

“I lost my senses two to three times when they were beating me. Elias threatened to kill me if I lodge any complaint against him” 

Hasan further said Elias beat him on his leg with bamboos and wooden sticks. “He (Elias) put pistol into my mouth and threatened me not to lodge any complaint against him,” he said.

Hasan said he is a supporter of BCL university unit’s joint secretary Sujon Baron Bishwas and organising secretary Sadi.

However, Elias Sabuj denied the allegation and said, “I just saved him from external goons, nothing else”.

Contacted, BCL leader Sujon Baron said, “Elias was the student of 2006-07 session but he is still president of the BCL unit. He is involved with extortion, tender business and university’s admission recruitment business”.

Other students have claimed Elias Hossain Sabuj was president of Perul union Jatiyatabadi Chatradal unit and was active in JCD’s university unit till 2013. They claimed, he then joined Bangladesh Chhatra League university unit and although his regular studentship was over couple of years before, he is still active in politics at university campus.

Kazi Kamal, proctor of Cumilla university, confirmed that Elias now is a student of MBA evening shift.

He said he received no complaints about the incident and said, “I would take action if any one submits complaint to the authorities”
