Five madrasas badly damaged
Five madrasa houses in Sadar and Kalapara upazilas were badly damaged due to sudden rainfall and gusty winds that lashed through different areas of the district on Monday.
As a result, academic activities in all those educational institutions are being greatly hampered due to lack of adequate accommodation facilities.
The affected institutions are Keshabpur Al-Amin Dakhil Madrasa, Islampur Dakhil Madrasa, Bazarghona Aminia Fazil Madrasa and Auliapur Maidan Islamia Hossainia Madrasa in Sadar upazila and Musulliabad Fazil Madrasa in Kalapara upazila.
“Due to strong winds and non-stop rainfall the 160-foot long and 25-foot wide tin-roofed madrasa house suddenly collapsed around 7:00am,” Superintendent of Keshabpur Al-Amin Madrasa Maulana Mohammad Younus said.
Academic activities of nearly 300 students of the madrasa, established in 1986, are being greatly hampered as the classrooms are not fit for use now, Maulana Younus said.
Patuakhali District Education Officer Md Jahangir Hossain said he heard about the loss and will inform the higher authorities to take necessary steps in this regard.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Mohammad Nazrul Islam said his office will send a list of the damaged educational institutions to the authorities concerned so that steps can be taken to repair those as soon as possible.
