The workers of a closed readymade garment factory today staged demonstration in Savar, on the outskirts area of Dhaka, demanding their four months’ arrears.

Around 250 workers of Signature in Stitch Apparels Ltd formed a human chain in front of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) around 11:30am and handed over a memorandum to him to press home their demands, reports our Savar correspondent.

The demonstrators alleged that the factory was declared shut without any prior notice. Even the authorities did not pay their salary of four months before the closure, our correspondent said.

“We informed the matter to police and upazila administration but no action was taken to resolve the issue,” they added.

“If our demand is not met, we will go for tougher programme,” said one of the demonstrators, Ali Akbar.

Rafiqul Islam Sujan, president of Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation, said, “Most of the workers live in rented houses. After the factory was declared closed, I tried to contact the factory owner but in vain. They refused to talk over the issue”.

The UNO, Sheikh Russel Hasan, said, “We are looking into the matter and trying to solve it”.

The Daily Star tired to contact with the factory owner Oahidul Islam over phone but could not reach him.
