HC questions authorities’ failure to curb mosquito menace at Dhaka airport

The High Court today questioned the authorities’ failure to curb mosquito menace at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area in Dhaka.

The court issued a rule asking the respondents to explain in four weeks why their inaction to kill mosquito in Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and its surrounding area should not be declared illegal.

In the rule, the HC also asked them to show cause why they should not be directed to take urgent steps to tackle the mosquito menace at the area.

Secretary to the ministry of civil aviation and tourism, chairman of Bangladesh civil aviation authority, mayor of Dhaka north city corporation and councilor of the ward concerned of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport have been made respondents to the rule.

The HC bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader came up with the rule following a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Tanvir Ahmed seeking its directive on the respondents to take steps for tackling the mosquito menace at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area.

During hearing Advocate Tanvir told the court that domestic and foreign passengers are affected by mosquitos at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area which damages the image of the country.

However, the respondents are not taking effective steps to contain the mosquito menace at the area, he argued.
