Student, biker killed in road accidents
A man was killed after being run over by a bus in the capital's Mirpur area yesterday.
Nur Islam Shanto, 28, was a mechanic of a motor workshop in the Bijoy Sarani area, police said.
He was on his way to Mirpur when a bus of Tetulia Paribahan hit his motorcycle from behind on Begum Rokeya Sarani in Shewrapara area, said police, quoting witnesses.
“Losing control, Shanto fell on the road and was run over by the bus as the driver sped up the vehicle in an attempt to escape the scene immediately,” Abdus Salam, a nearby street vendor told The Daily Star.
“Had the driver stopped right after the first hit, the biker could have survived,” Salam said.
Later, the passengers and nearby pedestrians caught the driver Saiful Islam and handed him over to police, said Dadon Fakir, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Model Police Station.
Police seized the bus and were preparing to file a case when this report was being filed, Dadon added.
Zahirul Islam, elder brother of the victim, said Nur, father of a two-year-old boy, used to live in Mogbazar area with his family.
Meanwhile in Chattogram, a university student was killed as a private car turned upside down after hitting a roadside island in the port city's Patenga area early yesterday.
The dead, Jerin Jahan, 20, was daughter of Abul Kalam, a resident of Chandgaon Residential Area in the city, said police.
She was a second-year student of computer science and engineering at the city's East Delta University.
The accident took place around 12:20am when Jerin and her fiancé Iftekher Ahmed were returning home from Patenga sea beach in a private car with Iftekher's cousin Mainul Islam on the driving seat, said Alauddin Talukder, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) police camp.
Jerin had a head injury and was rushed to CMCH immediately where the duty doctors declared her dead around 1.30am, the ASI added.
Contacted, Iftekher said, “Suddenly, a tyre of the car got punctured, forcing it to hit a roadside island before getting overturned.
“Jerin talked to me for eight to nine minutes after the incident and then she fell senseless,” said Iftekher, adding that Mainul was admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital in the city.
“Our wedding ceremony was supposed to be held after two months...her parents went to India...they are returning home after hearing the sad news,” said Iftekher.
