Karunaratne arrested for driving under the influence
Sri Lanka Test skipper Dimuth Karunaratne was arrested on Sunday morning for a drunk driving offence that resulted in a road accident in Colombo.
According to an ESPNCricinfo report, the accident put the driver of a three-wheeler in hospital and local police informed that the injured driver has sustained only minor injuries.
Karunaratne was granted bail after being taken into custody at roughly 5:40am in the Borella neighbourhood. The 30-year-old left-handed batsman is expected to appear in court this week. Sri Lanka Cricket is reportedly awaiting the official police report of the incident and the court proceedings, after which they may levy their own sanctions on Karunaratne.
It is quite a sharp fall for the batsman after recently guiding Sri Lanka to becoming the first South Asian team to win a Test series in South Africa. After that heady result, he was also being talked about as Sri Lanka’s prospective World Cup captain.
