Traffic sergeant closed after video of assaulting Pathao rider goes viral

A police official was withdrawn today after a video went viral in social media showing him physically assaulting a rider of ride-hailing service Pathao in Dhaka’s Hatirjheel area.

Sergeant Md Sohel Rana Chowdhury of Rampura Traffic Zone has been withdrawn after allegations surfaced against him of assaulting a motorcycle rider, Dr AHM Kamruzzaman, deputy commissioner (Traffic East Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star.

Sohel has been attached with deputy commissioner’s office of Traffic East Division, he added.

Earlier in the day, the video made rounds in the popular social media site Facebook, drawing flaks from among the netizens.

The incident took place this morning when Sergeant Sohel allegedly assaulted the Pathao rider even after filing a case against him for carrying a passenger without wearing helmet.
