The wasteland
This 12-acre landfill in Dakshin Surma upazila’s Lalmatia area in Sylhet has almost reached its capacity and the waste has begun to seep out slowly. The area around the landfill is now littered with waste too. Locals complain that the smell from the dumping ground has become unbearable. Furthermore, the locals, who rely on cultivating crops and fishing, find even water bodies and arable land full of waste. They say the water bodies choked with waste has resulted in fish dying. The landfill has been there for 20 years and around 300 tonnes of waste is dumped there every day.
