Third-grader killed in Barguna school ceiling collapse

Schoolgirl killed in Barguna

A third-grader schoolgirl was killed and 10 others injured as a portion of their school’s ceiling collapsed on them in Barguna’s Taltali upazila this morning.

The deceased was identified as Mansura, 10, daughter of Najir Hossain Howlader of Choto Bogi village, our Patuakhali correspondent reports quoting the local chairman, Toufiquzzaman Tanu.

Three of the injured were admitted to the upazila health complex while rest of them took primary treatment, he said.

The students were attending a class at PK Govt Primary when a chunk of concrete of the roof collapsed on them causing the casualties around 11:00am, said Pulak Chandra Hawlader, officer-in-charge of Taltali Police Station.

According to the police official, Mansura was pronounced dead after she was taken to the health complex.

All of the injured were third-graders, he said.

“We sent a team to the spot following the incident and legal steps will be taken if anyone files a case in this regard,” the OC said.

Sakerin Jahan, headmaster of the school, said the one-storey building was constructed about 20 years ago and it was unusable due to lack of renovation.

“We informed the higher authorities of the matter earlier,” she claimed.
