CU BCL clash with cops at campus, 9 hurt
Ruling party’s student front at Chittagong University clashed with policemen at campus today leaving at least nine including policemen injured.
The clash took place around 11:45am near the university main gate when activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were demanding resignation of proctor of the university.
They went on a strike this morning over their demand, stopping the shuttle train service for students at campus, our Chittagong University correspondent reports.
Police charged batons, sprayed water and fired tear gas shells to break the agitation, said Masiuddoula Reza, additional superintendent of police of Chattogram (north).
Five policemen were also injured as the protesters hurled brick chips towards the lawmen, he said. Two students were detained from the spot.
Rezaul Haque Rubel, former vice-president of CU unit of BCL, said police attacked on them without any provocation and dispersed them.
A tense situation was prevailing on the campus. The shuttle train service remained on halt till filing this report around 3:00pm.
The locomaster of the shuttle train was also held captive by the BCL activists and sent home, said officer-in-charge of Chattogram Railway Police Station Mustafizur Rahman.
WHAT ARE THE DEMANDS OF THE BCL MEN?
The striking BCL activists have been demanding the resignation of Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury, withdrawal of the officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station Belal Mohammad Jahangir for allegedly framing a false arms case against six BCL leaders of the CU unit.
They also demanded authorities concerned to withdraw all political cases filed against Chhatra League leaders between 2015 and 2018 and the release of the six BCL leaders who were arrested a few days back in the “falsely framed” arms case, the correspondent reports quoting senior BCL leaders.
