‘Wasa water gets polluted in pipeline’

Wasa assures swift steps for Jurain water

Authorities at state-run water supply company Wasa say that its supply water gets polluted in the pipelines before reaching the consumer level.

“We supply pure water. It gets polluted in the pipelines,” said Wasa Director AKM Shahid Uddin while talking to journalists and some protestors today.

“Also, many people do not clean the water tanks in their household. It is possible that it is due to such that the water is not clean,” he said.

He was talking to reporters on Wasa’s clean water issue in response to a demonstration of Jurain dwellers at Wasa Bhaban.

Five protesters from Jurain went to Wasa Bhaban, holding a jar of muddy liquid, what they said was juice made from Jurain’s supply water.

They tried to serve supply water “juice” to Wasa officials in a protest against Wasa managing director’s comments that “supply water is 100 per cent drinkable”.

Managing Director Taqsem Khan was unreachable and instead Wasa’s Director AKM Shahid Uddin invited the protesters in and tried to calm them down.

He assured the protestors that swift steps will be taken to ensure drinkable water supply to Jurain area. However, he did not drink the “juice”.

“We do not believe in assurance,” said Mizanur Rahman, a protestor. “We will gather more people and move for safe supply water in Jurain.”

“We, the Jurain people, have been suffering from polluted water supply for a long time,” he said, demanding apology from the Wasa MD for his remarks.

Responding to a report of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), Wasa MD Khan said Wasa water is 100 per cent drinkable.

He rubbished TIB’s report that said 91 per cent of Dhaka city dwellers boil the supply water from Wasa to make it drinkable.
