SC clears way for FBCCI election
The Supreme Court today cleared the way for holding the election to 21 posts of director of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) on April 27.
The apex court stayed a High Court order that halted the election to the post of FBCCI director.
A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the FBCCI seeking stay on the HC order.
FBCCI lawyer Barrister Imtiaz Mainul Islam told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar for holding election to FBCCI director post on April 27 following the SC order.
He said the appellate board of the FBCCI had scraped the candidature of Bazlur Rahman, a former director of FBCCI for being a loan defaulter.
Then, Bazlur Rahman filed a writ petition with the HC challenging the decision of FBCCI appellate board.
Following the writ petition, the HC on April 18 stayed the process for holding election to the posts of FBCCI director.
The FBCCI recently filed the petition with the SC seeking stay on the HC order, the lawyer said.
