Into The Fields of Gold

The glittering fields of gold signal the arrival of the paddy harvesting season. Farmers across the country are busy reaping the fruits of their labour. Bodies toil away in the final stages of their hard work which involves a lot of threshing, cleaning, reaping, field drying, stacking and bagging. Despite the sudden rains and hail storms, farmers are hopeful that they will have good yield this season. While the yield isn’t the problem, the prices being offered by wholesalers are. Some farmers complained that they were being offered Tk 520-580 per maund instead of the government set price of Tk 1050 per maund. They said this stemmed from a lack of monitoring in the crop fields, where a lot of the buying and selling takes place. Farmers fear they would not be able to make a profit if they aren’t offered a higher price. The photos were taken from Ashulia in the outskirts of the capital.
