3 RSO men linked to Burdwan blast jailed

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced three Myanmar nationals to 10 years in jail for their involvement in planning subversive activities in Bangladesh.

The convicts are Md Nur Hossain alias Rafiqul Islam, 30, Yasir Arafat, 26, and Omar Karim, 29. Of them, Omar is still at large.

According to court documents, all of them were members of Myanmar-based militant outfit Rohingya Solidarity Organisation.

Judge Md Rabiul Alam of the Special Tribunal-4 handed down the sentence under Explosive Substances Act in presence of the two accused.

The tribunal fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default of which they will have to serve ad-ditional six months in jail.

The punishment of the fugitive will be effective from the day of their arrest, the judge said in his judgment.

According to the case statement, a team of detectives arrested Nur and Yasir with ex-plosives from Sir Salimullah Muslim Orphanage Road in the capital’s Lalbagh on No-vember 30, 2014. Four other militants, including Omar managed to flee from the place of  occurrence.

The convicts had links to a blast took place in a rented house in Burdwan town of Kol-kata on October 2, 2014.

Moreover, they had been planning to conduct subversive activities in Bangladesh with the help of international Islamic militant organisations.

On March 3, 2015, investigation officer of the case SI Md Abdul Kader Miah submitted a charge sheet accusing the three.
