No respite now from heat wave

2 depressions likely this month

There would be no respite from the heat wave in the next few days, the Met office forecast yesterday.

The mild heat wave that has been sweeping over the country since Monday, a day after Cyclone Fani crossed the country, would continue for the next few days, it said.

“The temperature also may increase,” said Shamsuddin Ahmed, director of Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

Chances of rain are very low, except in Sylhet region, he said.

Currently, the heat wave is sweeping over Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and some areas of Tangail, Dinajpur, and Saidpur and it may continue and spread, said a Met office press release yesterday.

The temperature was recorded above 36 degrees Celsius in those places yesterday.

The country’s maximum temperature was recorded at 37.7 degrees Celsius in Ishwardi yesterday and the lowest at 21.3 degrees celsius in Sylhet.

The Met office forecast that rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty wind, is likely to occur at one or two places.

It also said one or two depressions might form in the Bay this month.

“Of the depressions, one may intensify into a cyclone,” said Shamsuddin, adding that it was not confirmed whether it would hit Bangladesh.

Besides, there are chances of some tornadoes and hailstorms this month, the Met office added.
